In most Pakistani homes salt reaches the table in whatever is handy: the plastic jar from the kitchen, a small bowl or a spoon from the packet. Pepper may not appear at all. It seems minor, but a proper set of shakers is one of those details that makes a dining table feel complete, especially when guests are over. It is also more hygienic than a shared bowl that everybody dips into.

Why bother with a set?

With many families eating less salt for health reasons, putting it on the table in shakers instead of adding extra while cooking lets each person decide.

Choosing a material

Ceramic and porcelain shakers are heavy enough not to tip over and look smart with white dinnerware. Glass lets you see when they need refilling. Stainless steel is durable and modern, and wooden accents add warmth. Fun shapes, such as fruits, are a cheerful choice for everyday family meals and make good small gifts.

Hole size matters

Salt is fine and flows quickly, so salt shakers usually have fewer or smaller holes. Pepper is coarser, so pepper shakers often have more holes. If your set does not mark which is which, many people follow the custom of putting salt in the one with fewer holes. Some sets use letters or different colours.

Stopping salt from clumping

Humidity is the enemy of free-flowing salt, and much of Pakistan is humid for part of the year, especially Karachi and coastal areas, and everywhere during the monsoon. Try these:

Beyond salt and pepper

Pakistani tables often carry more than two seasonings. Consider a small set for:

A toothpick holder is also useful after meals with meat. Some sets combine salt, pepper and a toothpick holder in one tray.

Cleaning and care

Empty shakers fully every month or two and wash them in warm soapy water. Use a pin or a thin brush to clear blocked holes. Let them dry overnight before refilling; any moisture inside will clump the salt immediately.

Setting the table

Place the salt and pepper set in the middle of the table for family meals, or put one set at each end for larger dawats. Along with a water jug, napkins and a tissue box, they complete a ready-to-eat table.

A useful small gift

Salt and pepper sets make thoughtful gifts for newly married couples, people moving into a new home or anyone who loves cooking. Pair them with a bottle of good olive oil or a packet of spices for a complete present.
